Midterm grades have arrived at Alabama Birmingham and it's not good news for coach Mike Davis.
Jeremy Mayfield, who played in every game in 2006-07 and the final 22 games last season, has been declared academically ineligible. So has backup point guard Ed Berrios. He's a senior so his college career is over.
Terrence Roderick, who failed to qualify last season, and Armon Bassett, a transfer from Indiana who was sitting out the season, have left the team.
There is good news. Davis' son, Mike Jr., is once again eligible after sitting out the fall semester because of academics.
All the roster shuffling leaves the Blazers (5-3) with only six scholarship players and two walk-ons entering Wednesday night's game against Jackson State.
"Some step up and accept the challenge," the coach said. "Some of them step back and say, 'Well, we don't have a chance.' We'll have to see."
