It's more than Xs and O's for the Louisville coach. On the college basketball catwalk, he's regarded as the most fashionable coach around.
Pitino talked about his zest for style with Joseph Lord of the Louisville Courier-Journal. For you slobs looking for a few fashion tips, here's what Pitino has to say:
"I look for more of a Wall Street, classic-type suit. Back in the '80s, when Wall Street was at a high, that's the type of dress I've always liked. Very colorful, strong ties with fashionable shirts and pinstripe suits.
"I've never liked the Hollywood look. That's ultra-casual. It's an unkempt look. To me, it's not professional."
And he notices what other coaches are wearing.
"I think [St. Louis coach] Rick Majerus and [former Indiana and Texas Tech coach] Bob Knight put as much thought into clothing as they do where they eat lunch — they don't put any thought into it at all," Pitino said, laughing.
"You do notice that certain coaches dress well. I think Jay Wright from Villanova is one of the sharper, classier dressers in college basketball."
