Pete Maravich died 21 years ago this month, but the greatness of the Louisiana State standout remains etched in the record books. Maravich scored 3,667 points in his college career, a mark that many think may never be challenged because nearly every standout player leaves early for the riches of the NBA.
But Davidson junior Stephen Curry has a chance if he decides to return for his senior season. It's considered a longshot at the moment because Curry has been playing a lot of point guard this season to get ready for the NBA.
Curry has 2,127 points after scoring 39 Wednesday night in the Wildcats' 83-68 victory over Elon. If he comes back next season and averages around 30 points a game, he has a shot of breaking Maravich's record.
How great was Maravich? He played 83 games with no three-point shot or shot clock and averaged 44.2 points in his Tiger career. Curry has already played 86 games.
