For a weekend, Detroit will try to forget about its troubles. With an auto industry on the brink of collapse and double-digit unemployment, the city is ground zero for the Great Recession.
Frank Fitzpatrick of the Philadelphia Inquirer took a trip down Michigan Avenue, from the city's western border to its downtown. He wrote that it's an "eye-opening journey. The economically bombed-out area makes North Broad Street look like Rodeo Drive."
Dave Wharton of the Los Angeles Times writes that Motor City residents are eager to turn to sports in a time of need. "Every day we're getting slapped with something. You can't even watch the news," said David Frank, an engineer at a General Motors plant. "If nothing else, we get a weekend off."
