Northeastern plays host to Louisiana Tech on Saturday in one of the Bracket Buster games being telecast by ESPN. It's a big day for the school located in Boston, but you won't be reading much about it in the Boston Herald.
The newspaper has been running only box scores and short summaries on Huskies sports since late November. A feud started between the sides on Nov. 23, when the school announced the termination of its football program before a room full of TV, radio and print reporters.
The one media organization missing from that news conference was the Herald. Sports editor Hank Hryniewicz said Northeastern officials did not alert his department about the news conference, and he has asked Northeastern officials for an explanation but has been ignored.
"When a major university is having a major event designed to explain the decision to cancel its football program, when you neglect to invite one of the major media outlets that covers your team, I think you're not doing your job," said Hryniewicz, who graduated from Northeastern in 1984 with a degree in journalism.
"If Northeastern University doesn't think it's important to have the Boston Herald covering its news conferences, maybe they don't deserve to be covered by the Boston Herald."
Senior vice president of external affairs Mike Armini said the university doesn't have it out for the Herald.
"All news organizations we treated exactly the same regarding the press conference," he said. "In the end, it was packed with media and turned out to be a fantastic success."
Hryniewicz isn't buying it.
"I just want an explanation and I don't think I'm out of line," he said. "I'm just waiting for an explanation on what might've happened so I can try to piece it together and see what might've gone wrong."
