Former Kentucky guard Eric Bledsoe is the focus of an NCAA investigation, according to the New York Times.
Changes in Bledsoe's academic record while a prep in Alabama is at the heart of the probe, with investigators also looking at possible extra benefits the player and his mother received after a transfer.
Bledsoe played only one season at Kentucky before declaring himself available for the NBA draft, to be held June 24 at Madison Square Garden. He is projected to be selected in the middle of the first round.
The Times reports that Bledsoe's grade-point average in core courses jumped from 1.9 after his junior year to just under 2.5 during his senior year at A.H. Parker High in Birmingham. Bledsoe transferred to Parker for his senior year after the district closed Carol W. Hayes High.
The Times reports that Maurice Ford, Bledsoe's coach at Parker, is being investigated for possibly helping Bledsoe's mother pay rent after she and her son moved into a house for the player's season season.
Ford denied any wrongdoing.
"I'm a poor black man," he said. "And when one black man tries to help another black man, there's always something wrong."
Bledsoe and his mother, Maureen Reddick were unavailable for comment.
